Come Together for Health & Fitness

Greetings,

This week wasn't filled with a bunch of great workouts for me, since I was a bit under the weather with a cold again.  I went Wed-Fri without a workout at all.  Felt rested up enough for a Kettlebell workout on Saturday morning, just some basic squat, push, pull, and bend exercises.  Nothing too intense to shock me.

Today's morning routine was on the XC Ski machine, a 12 minute Tabata round of 4 minutes easy, 4 minutes Tabata, and 4 minutes easy.

Right after that, I did 100 reps of KB Snatches with my 30# Kettlebell. 50 each side, 5 reps at a time per side.  This took me roughly 5 minutes to do, alternating it back & forth from arm to arm, only using one kettlebell.

So, I got 2 little workouts done in less than 20 minutes time.

In other news...

I'm looking forward today for an Open House of the new Finley Community Wellness Center, which is starting in our city auditorium.  Here's a great story for you, on people coming together to find solutions for health, wellness, and active lifestyle opportunities.

There was a fundraising supper held at the auditorium back in early August.  A few of the people I was sitting around were talking about getting something going there in the auditorium, for health & fitness.  The ladies who were talking were asking me some questions, since they know I have had a good background of experience with various fitness centers & programs.  You see, years ago back when I was a kid, the auditorium's balcony had a few treadmills, a couple bikes, and a weight set.  It was called the Finley Athletic Club and was started by a small group of guys in town. It went for 1-2 years I think, and since its a small town, a lot of the use of the facility was kept on the honor system and keys were handed out to members.  Soon, kids would steal their parents keys and go up there and be unsupervised.  Now, 99 times out of 100, kids would treat the place right and not do anything crazy and respect the place.  But, all it took was 1-2 times of some kids being rough on things and breaking things, and the club soon came to a halt.

In recent years, the auditorium's heating system was costing a lot for the city, due to its inefficiency of being so old, and the heating costs becoming really high.  So, the city had it closed for almost half the year during the winter months.

The city then decided to put in a new heating system that would be more efficient, but they still planned on closing it during the winter months.  Well, in Finley, a town of 500 people, there isn't much to do for fun & fitness during the winter months.  So, a group of people in town, myself included, came together to start putting forth an effort to keep the auditorium open, year-round.  The Finley Community Wellness Center was created, and efforts have been made to re-open the balcony for cardio equipment, much of which has been donated to help get the place started.  We also got permission from the city council to use the stage for free weights (in which I have lent out my Olympic weight set and power rack unit to be used up there).  All in all, things are looking great to offer a site of health & wellness opportunities for our small town.  We came together, used our resources already available to us, and with a little elbow grease, it all fell in place.

I'm looking at doing some ladies-only and men-only fitness group training sessions to help generate some more interest in the center.  With my volleyball coaching schedule winding down, I should have most of November open for running some camps again.

Also, my blog wouldn't be complete unless I talked about my volleyball team.  The JV & C squad's both took 2nd place in their tourney yesterday.  They all played really well and it was awesome seeing them having fun out there. My C-squad really needed this boost in our season, as we have had a small losing streak as of late and I think we got a lot of stuff worked out. Our Varsity had a HUGE win on Thursday night, over the top team in our district. I called in the scores since it was a home game for us, and even the papers & TV stations were stunned to hear the news.  We have some great potential to do really well in the post-season that is coming up in a couple weeks.  This has been a really fun season to start with coaching volleyball!

Til next time...
