A Quick, Timeless Jaunt...
Greetings,
Sometimes, it's good just to get that stopwatch off your wrist, lace up those racin' shoes, and just fly out the door for a quick little run. (Hence, the "timeless" part of my blog's title!)
That's exactly what I felt like doing tonight.
It was 'one of those days', as many people have at their workplace now & then. I was in such a poor mood after work today, I was even thinking of cancelling my run at one point. I missed out on a run last night due to really poor weather. I don't have good luck running in cold, hard rains: mainly because I usually get really worn down from such a run. I went out tonight instead, still cool, a bit breezy, but good enough to get in a short run. And I do mean short...
I ran about 7-8 blocks around town before I went down to the track, then immediately got into some 100m sprints at race-pace feel, and 100m jogs in-between, 8 times, for basically a mile's worth in total. I then walked over to the city park, did a quick sprint on the driveway hill as my "finisher", and just cooled down with a walk back home.
Workouts like this sort of hearken back to the days before digital stopwatches, GPS monitors, heart rate monitors & their 'training zones', etc. Sometimes we just need to 'zone out', and not get caught up in a guessing game. The guessing game I'm talking about is referring to the numerous questions I get online, such as:
"How many calories should I be burning per workout?"
"How many miles should I run each day?"
"How good should my mile time be for a police fitness test?"
"How long should I stay in a heart rate zone, or can I go above the zone that's set on my watch? I feel I can go harder.."
"Am I strength training too much, or not enough? I want to gain weight but stay lean..."
The list can go on & on here...
As you know, I'm all about performance, and performance is tracked by many parameters, many of which that are based/measured by things like weight, time, power outputs, training zones & percentages, etc.
But, sometimes we read so much about this program, that program, that trainer does this, while this other trainer does that, this coach has his athletes doing this, the other is doing something totally different, etc. We get confused, befuddled, and a lot of people will second-guess every single aspect of their training, even down to the supplements they may take, like a simple whey protein powder.
Enough! You can put a stop to such madness.
Some days, we just need to get out there and work on our 'primal instincts', our 'gut feelings', and train those, too. That's why days of just going out there and running however long you feel like, in whatever time you feel, is just fine to do now & then.
Back when I played basketball in high school, some of my best times were had in just playing ball with some friends, not being worried about how many points I was personally scoring, or how many rebounds I had. I was just playing to have fun. There was no clock, no scoreboard, just the sunset & street lights, and the 10pm curfew siren to let us know how late it was. You can create great workouts by just going out and running on your own free will, on the fly.
So, I invite you to go out sometime within the next week, leave the watch at home, and just get out & run with your primal instincts. You'll probably have a lot of fun with it.
