Announcing a BIG Event...

Greetings, 1MileNation'ers!

I have some EXCITING News to tell you....

After reading an email newsletter from a major running magazine today, I wanted to finally get going on something I wanted to do ever since I started 1MileNation.com:  that 'thing' is creating a Virtual Race for the 1-Mile distance!

What is a Virtual Race?  Basically, its racing from home and posting your results, comparing it to all the other runners throughout the nation (even the rest of the world!), who compete in the same run.

I'll try to keep this simple as I can, since this is the first time I'm attempting such an online community event.

The date of the main race is Saturday, April 18th.  If you cannot race that day, there is an allowed 'make-up day' for Sunday, April 19th.  Basically this will be a 'race weekend'.

Rules are simple:  Find an outdoor track you can run on, or find an indoor one to test yourself on.  I think to be fair, we should have both an outdoor mile & an indoor mile competition, so you'd choose one or the other to race in.  So, pick your indoor-only or outdoor-only choice, and time yourself.  It is recommended that you get someone with a stopwatch to time you, and get specific with the results.

Getting specific with the times would be like this: if you ran a 6:15 mile, your stopwatch read "6:15.43", the 6:15.43 would be your official race time.

Once your race is done, you can email your results to me at Rick@ASAPWorkouts.com.

Just one question to put out there: would there be any interest in making this a 'team' event, sort of like a mini-track meet?  Teams of 3, 4, 5 people would be suggested.  5 would be fine off the top of my head.  Just thought I'd toss this question out there.  Please let me know if there is an interest in having a team concept to this race.  If you feel it should have both an individual and team approach, let me know.

I bring up the team concept because apparently there were 2 cross-country teams that had a virtual contest between them, one located in Georgia, the other in Connecticut I believe. Granted, conditions were different, but basically times were taken, scores lined up, and the 'meet' was scored all online. I thought that was pretty neat and could be done with this type of race, too.  That way, if you have 3-4 friends who would want to join you in this Virtual Race, you can work as a team in training for it.

I will also work with my network of other trainers in creating prizes for winning in this race, too.  I have a few initial weeks here to prepare a plan for prizes and such.  I have a feeling that winning things like free training e-books would be ideal for these trainers to offer to winners. As I put my feelers out to my network, I'll keep you informed.

So, once again, I'm having a Virtual 1-Mile Race on April 18th: Just 8 weeks away!

Set your calendars, & start telling your friends, ASAP!
